Swimming Up the Sun: A Memoir of Adoption By Nicole J. Burton

Swimming Up the Sun book review

Born adopted and raised in England Emigrated to the United States with my family Fell in love with playwriting as a teenager and have been writing plays and books ever since Live with my husband photographer James Landry in Riverdale Park Maryland. Swimming Up the sunzone At age 22 the author set out to find her English birth parents a Jewish father and a mother believed to be an artist The adventure led to parents grandparents and siblings a kaleidoscope of relationships with one dark secret at its center As an adoptive child in Britain playwright Nicole J Burton always wanted to find her birth parents After immigrating with her adoptive family to the United States she pursued the elusive characters haunting her imagination With an appointment with one of Her Majesty s social workers and her birth mother s name in hand she returned home to Britain There she began a search that led to drama than any play she could possibly conceive Swimming Up the Sun A Memoir of AdoptionAn excellent story about family and what family means to adoptees Really enjoyed reading it and highly recommend it Paperback Swimming Up the Sun is a touching and emotional memoir of an adoptee searching for her identity I was drawn in from the beginning and I didn t want to put it down once I started Throughout the book I felt like the author had opened a window to her very deepest emotions and feelings about searching for and finding her birth family The emotions Nicole Burton experienced are raw and they are real The names and places are different for each adoptee but the emotions of search and reunion are the same In this book I felt like she captured her experience beautifully She paints a clear picture of her first meeting with her birth father where she noted she felt like she was looking at someone she had seen before I could also feel her emotions when her first conversation with her birth mother started out with I don t want to get involved in your life. Swimming Up the sunx30 sunscreen but I am curious As an adoptee who has searched and found this book was an emotional read I highly recommend this book for all members of the adoption triad But I think the appeal of this book goes beyond those involved with adoption It is an honest and deep reflection of a life that can be appreciated by many Paperback I appreciated the honesty in this story as it was a difficult one to tell From an Adoptee s standpoint my heart was wrenched for Nichole many times during her quest for answers. Book Swimming Up the sun and down If I were to rate this on the writing alone it would be a threesorry However the content raises the bar of importance for me and pressed me through to the end I just had to know what happened Not much depth of feeling for the reader but held my attention because I am an Adoptee. Swimming Up the sunzone Great job Nichole this is a fabulous story that needs to be heard Paperback Well written Paperback I felt very depressed after reading this book perhaps because the narrator s relationship with her adoptive parents did not seem important after she discovered her birth parents Or maybe it was just the way the author couldn t seem to feel empathy for her birthmother I think it might have made a better novel rather than a memoir Paperback
