During this book Hedin is given free access to roam around the Army s rear areas with a couple trips to the rear of the front trenches He is allowed to sketch many scenes usually of troops and logistics on the march but also artillery batteries as well He conducts many interviews ranging from German privates to British and French POWs He also documents the condition of post August 1914 Belgium in a very different light than most other sources. Hedin does give an enormous amount of support to the German war effort and in Germany s superiority in the conflict but he is also very honest in his depiction of the German Army and offers a surprisingly intimate viewpoint Those who study the First World War would do well to read this exceptionally rare glimpse into the German Army With the German Armies in the West This was a remarkable peek into the almost ridiculous level of optimism the combatants carried into the first months of the Great War The author who appears to be on a first name basis with all manner of brass hats on the German side of the conflict believes uncritically in the German cause and dismisses all other opinions as either deluded or bald faced lies Welll illustrated with photos the author took sketches he made and some other maps and diagrams With the German Armies in the West
