Featuring beautiful and sweet art Tex is a prettily illustrated book that I can t in good conscience recommend for kids I especially didn t like how the story handled the dog breeder and the dog pound or I d have rated this book higher Unfortunately it presents the pound as a place professional breeders take the inconvenient offspring The relationship of the breeder to the dogs if no one chooses him with his overbite off to the pound plus the puppy mama taken away to another cage just screams backyard puppy mill breeder to me Children really must be taught better Mama dogs deserve life than cage to whelp box to cage until they can no longer produce pups And while it is a lovely clean wrap up runt pure breed with overbite finds love and forever home at the pound that is often NOT what happens to dogs even pure breed young dogs and for sure not likely to be the fate of the mama dog once the irresponsible breeder has wrung the last few pups from her If we ever hope to improve the lives of puppy mill mamas and dogs in general then kids have to learn that the dog pound or shelter is usually a place of terror and depression for the dogs Presenting the adoption and happy outcome fantastic lessons for kids but teaching through story that breeders can dump unwanted offspring that it is normal and acceptable that is quite simply a disservice to our kids and our animal companions 9781552092910
